My Grandma Lucille used to make this Sausage Pot with Potatoes and Green Beans all the time as I was growing up.  She would always small the potatoes in a bowl for me, then top them with a bit of butter, broth from the pot, and then the kielbasa sausage and green beans.

Yep, it’s pretty basic, but that’s actually the beauty of this meal.  I love the simplicity and speed of this recipe, and my family loves to have me make.  If there are any leftovers, which rarely happens, they reheat really nicely the next day for lunch, either on the stove top or in the microwave.

What to Love About This Recipe –

  1. It’s just 4 ingredients.
  2. It’s easy, fast and very budget-friendly.
  3. It’s a solid and tasty recipe for feeding your family.
  4. It was my Grandma Lucille’s recipe – a keeper!

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Instant Pot Smoked Sausage with Potatoes and Green Beans?  Very few, actually!

  • Sausage Kielbasa

Kielbasa is a pre-cooked sausage and you’ll find it in the brat section of your local grocery store.  You’ll also see other pre-cooked sausage there, such as smoked sausage, andouille sausage, frankfurters, etc. (And you can actually use any pre-cooked sausage in this recipe, too.) Make sure you don’t accidentally pick up raw, uncooked sausages as that’s not what you need for this particular recipe.

  • Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil

You can use any type of oil that’s got a high smoke point (vegetable, canola, peanut, olive oil, etc) for this recipe.  You’re using the oil to brown off the Kielbasa sausage chunks because the browning really adds to the flavor – don’t skip this step, please!

  • Broth

I typically use chicken broth in this recipe, but you can actually use whatever broth you have on hand….chicken, beef, or vegetable. Any of them will work just great. If you don’t have broth, you can use water but the flavor won’t be nearly as yummy, so be prepared!

  • Potatoes

I typically use russet or red potatoes in this dish, because they are typically more readily available in my rural area and are also the most economical.  However, when I can, I do enjoy making this Kielbasa one-pot meal with Yukon Gold potatoes since they have such a creamy texture and buttery flavor.  Again, use what you’ve got on hand!

  • Green Beans

I used frozen green beans in this recipe, but I remember that my Grandma Lucille always used canned green beans, instead.  Use what you prefer and what your family enjoys best. If you use canned green beans, I’d drain them a bit first, before adding them to your pot.

Instant Pot Kielbasa Sausage with Potatoes and Green Beans is an easy and fast one-pot meal.

Recipe Tips for Making This Quick and Easy Kielbasa Recipe

  • What is Kielbasa sausage, anyway?

Kielbasa is a pre-cooked sausage that you’ll find in the brat section of your local grocery store.  You’ll also see other pre-cooked sausage there, such as smoked sausage, andouille sausage, frankfurters, etc. (You can actually use any pre-cooked sausage in this recipe, too.) Just make sure you don’t accidentally pick up raw, uncooked sausages as that’s not what you need for this particular recipe.

  • Does it matter what type of Kielbasa sausage I use for this recipe?

Not really.  Sometimes I use beef kielbasa and sometimes I use turkey kielbasa – whatever I have on hand.

  • Does Kielbasa sausage freeze well?

It definitely does.  I like to stock up on Kielbasa or smoked sausage whenever I can catch a sale, throwing it into my freezer to use as I need it.  It freezes great and thaws really quickly, too.

  • What’s so great about Kielbasa sausage, anyway?

I try to NEVER be out of Kielbasa sausage, since my family is a bunch of carnivores and they want meat in EVERYTHING, it seems.  That’s usually the first thing they ask me: “Mom, where’s the MEAT?” And, since Kielbasa sausage is pre-cooked, you can quickly ADD it to so many dishes, such as Mac and Cheese, Scrambled Eggs, Skillet Meals, Soups, etc – the list goes on and on because Kielbasa is so versatile.

  • Why does this recipe to instruct to brown the Kielbasa sausages first?

Browning the sausages first really adds to the flavor of the sausage.  Plus once you brown the sausages, that step leaves a lot of flavor behind in the pot, which is then absorbed into the remaining ingredients giving them more flavor, as well.  It’s truly a worthwhile step!

  • What’s the best way to serve this meal?

We like to serve this up in bowls, smashing the potatoes on the bottom as the base, then ladling the broth from the pot over the potatoes before adding the green beans and potatoes on top.  So yummy!

  • Add the green beans and reserved sausages to the pot, locking the Instant Pot lid into place once more.
