Howdy! Chef Alli Here. Let’s Get You Cookin’….Shall We? ?

Air fryer cooking seems to be all the rage right now and I can honestly say that I’m always tooting the air fryer horn.

We love our air fryer and use it much, much more than I ever thought we would. I’ve made a quiche in my air fryer, lots and lots of bacon, and gobs of French fries.

The air fryer we use is the Cuisinart TOA-60 and it’s an air fryer that also doubles as a convection toaster oven. It’s been sitting on my counter for over 2 years now and because we use it so often, that air fryer gets to stay on that valuable piece of real estate!

I am usually cooking for a family of 4 (3 men and me) so I was afraid that the air fryer wouldn’t be big enough. Turns out, I was wrong. And, if we need to cook more of something, it’s no big deal since the air fryer cooks so fast.

One of the best things about the air fryer is how it makes leftovers like brand new again….especially leftover pizza! Just incredible – all nice and crispy again. You won’t believe it until you try it for yourself.

We love to make Air Fryer Roasted Broccoli Parmesan and Air Fryer Buffalo Cauliflower. Air-Fryer Honey-Glazed Salmon (made with just 4 ingredients) is super addictive and so are Air-Fryer Pulled Pork Nachos.

If you’re a fan of Italian-inspired flavors, make the Air Fryer French Bread Pizza – set it up as a pizza bar and let your kiddos dig in and be creative. The So-Easy Air Fryer Pepperoni Pizza Breadsticks are always a hit, too.

What to Love About This Recipe –

  1. It’s good fast food.
  2. It can be served without a bun as a low-carb option.
  3. When those peppers and onions are cooking, you’ll be salivating like crazy.

Recipe Tips for Making Air Fryer Brats with Onions and Peppers

  • Are brats the same thing as sausages?
  • Why does this recipe call for brats that are pre-cooked?
  • Where do I find pre-cooked brats at the grocery store?
  • Can I use brats or sausages that are not pre-cooked?

The word “brat” is slang for the sausage called bratwurst. All brats are sausages, but not all sausages are brats. There are many types of sausages.

Sausage is defined as ground meat with seasonings that are packed into a casing to make a cylindrical, elongated piece of meat that comes in various sizes. Most sausages are sold in the raw form.

This recipe calls for brats that are pre-cooked. Pre-cooked brats are great for fast meals because all they need is to be heated throughout and browned on the exterior. Voila – they are ready to eat….pronto!

Pre-cooked brats are typically going to be found in the refrigerated case where you will find hotdogs and lunchmeat because these items are pre-cooked as well.

Brats that are not pre-cooked (raw) are typically located in the meat case containing other pork products (such as pork chops and pork roasts, etc) since all of these items need to be cooked before they can be eaten.

If you want to make this meal with raw brats instead of the pre-cooked brats the recipe is recommending, you will need to cook them for a much longer time.

If using raw brats, cook them alone in the air fryer until they reach an internal temperature of 150 degrees F before adding them to the peppers and onions.

How to Make Air Fryer Brat Sausages with Peppers and Onions in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Place the sliced onions and bell peppers into a large mixing oil; drizzle with a bit of olive oil, tossing to coat. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning and salt and pepper, to taste, over the vegetables, then toss once more.
  2. Place the seasoned vegetables onto the rack of your air fryer in a single layer, then slide the rack into the air fryer that is set to 325 degrees F. Cook the vegetables for 3 minutes, then top them with the pre-cooked brats.
  3. Cook the brats with the vegetables for 5 minutes, then turn the brats to the other side and cook an additional 5-10 minutes, keeping a careful eye on the the brats so they don’t get too brown. Serve at once.
