I look forward to this easy sweet potato side dish every single Thanksgiving! In fact, I like it so much I often make it again at Christmas.

After all these years, my family now EXPECTS this side dish at our holiday meals. The only thing is, they don’t know whether to eat it as a side dish or as a dessert!

I say do whatever makes your heart happy, but I really enjoy this side dish alongside my Turkey in an Electric Roaster or Honey Baked Boneless Ham because I like a little SWEET with my SAVORY.

Add that crumble topping, then let everything caramelize and you’ve yourself a side dish that’s an absolute masterpiece with very little work involved!

Ingredients and Substitutions

Sweet potato apple casserole in the crockpot ingredients.

For a complete list of ingredients, see the detailed recipe card below.

  • Sweet potatoes: If you choose elongated sweet potatoes rather than round ones, you can slice them in half and then into chunks much more easily.
  • Apples: I think a more tart apple is better in this dish since it complements the sweetness of the sweet potatoes and pecan topping. I like Granny Smith or Jonathon apples, but you can sure use what you have on hand.
  • Butter: Melted
  • Dark brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Pecans: You can substitute walnuts for the pecans, if desired. Nuts are a must in this dish for needed crunch and texture.

My Recipe Tips

  1. To easily cut the sweet potatoes into chunks, cut the sweet potatoes in half lengthwise. Place the cut-side-down on a cutting board and slice each one in half lengthwise again. Now cut each one into 1-1/2 inch chunks and repeat with the remaining sweet potatoes.
  2. If you’re having trouble cutting the sweet potatoes into chunks, use a sharp knife with a wider/sturdier blade, such as a chef’s knife. This makes the task so much easier!
  3. Sometimes I even add a few fresh cranberries half way through the cooking time, sprinkling them on top. This adds pretty color to the dish, too.

Sweet Potato Apple Casserole FAQs

If I have a smaller crock pot, can I cut this recipe in half?

Yes, and it works perfectly. You’ll need to shorten the cooking time since you are cooking half the quantity, but expect it to take at least 2 hours on low before it’s tender when tested with a fork.

How should I store and reheat leftovers of this dish?

Store any cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Leftovers taste best when reheated in the microwave for 30-60 seconds.

Can I use canned sweet potatoes in this recipe?

Because canned sweet potatoes are already fully cooked upon opening, they will not work in this recipe. Frozen sweet potatoes also will not work since they are par-cooked before being flash frozen. Using canned or frozen sweet potatoes in this recipe will result in a very soggy and mushy outcome.
