I have always detested making sweet corn in a pot of boiling water. It seems to take forever that way, not to mention taking up a lot of room on your cook top, too. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of good ways to cook sweet corn that have NOTHING to do with a pot of boiling water – read more on those techniques here.
How to Make Corn on the Cob in Your Instant Pot…..In Just 2 Minutes!
Sweet Corn! Not to be confused with field corn (like what is fed to cattle), sweet corn grown in Kansas typically starts popping up at vegetable stands and farmer’s markets by mid July, maybe even earlier, depending on the weather. I especially like checkerboard sweet corn, but any young, tender corn on the cob is delicious when cooked in the Instant Pot.
Sugar and water. You need the water to cook the corn. The water in your Instant Pot (or any electric pressure cooker) is what circulates to make the steam, and the steam is what, in turn, makes the pressure. The pressure is what cooks your corn in just 2 minutes….ah-mazing! The sugar is simply in the water because that’s how both of my Grandma’s did it and they claimed it gave added sweetness to the corn. I believe them so I do it, too. 🙂
Butter. Salt. Pepper. Lots and lots of butter! Then, a good seasoning of salt and pepper.
Recipe Tips for Making Perfect Corn on the Cob in Your Instant Pot
- Can I make corn on the cob in any electric pressure cooker? Yes. And the bigger the Instant Pot/electric pressure cooker, the more corn you can cook at once. I am really enjoying the newest 6-quart Instant Pot that has the dial selector. When I have a big group of people over, I use my 12-quart electric pressure cooker since it will hold upwards of 12-14 ears of corn.
- What’s the best way to keep cooked corn on the cob warm when you are making lots of it? As you make it, toss the hot, cooked corn on the cob into a cooler (one without ice) and you’ll be amazed at how long the corn will stay piping hot.
- Why do you need the trivet in the bottom of the Instant Pot when cooking corn? The trivet elevates the corn so it’s not sitting smack-flat on the bottom of the pot, helping the water that’s in the bottom of the Instant Pot to circulate easier, making it pressurize quicker.
I’ve never tried it, but I’m betting you could probably cook the ears of corn in the Instant Pot without the trivet in the bottom. (If you try it, let me know!)
I always use my trivet when I made hard boiled eggs in my Instant Pot, though I’ve had plenty of people tell me that they make hard boiled eggs all the time in their IP with NO trivet.
- What type of trivet is best for the Instant Pot? You can use a metal trivet, like the one that comes with most any electric pressure cooker when you purchase it, or if you prefer, you can opt for a silicone trivet.

How to Make 2-Minute Instant Pot Corn on the Cob
- 8 ears sweet corn, husked and silks removed
- 1 pinch granulated sugar
- water just enough to cover the bottom of your Instant Pot (or any electric pressure cooker)
- 1/2 cup butter
- Cover the bottom of the Instant Pot with water (approx. 1 cup depending on the size of your pot), then add a good pinch of granulated sugar.
- Place a trivet (either metal or silicone) into the bottom of the Instant Pot, the stand or lay the ears of corn on top of the trivet. (I usually stand my ears up, letting them lean on each other.
- Lock the Instant Pot lid into place, then use the manual button, choosing High Pressure setting for 2 minutes, bringing the Instant Pot to full pressure. When the timer sounds, perform a quick release to remove all pressure from the Instant Pot.
- Carefully unlock the Instant Pot lid and remove it; use tongs to remove the hot, cooked sweet corn from the pot. Slather the ears of corn with butter, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Enjoy at once!
