These take your everyday ham and cheese sliders and put a really fun twist on them with smoked gouda, a nuttier cheese version. Double this recipe and make two pans – one for now and one for later.
These are the perfect sandwiches for a crowd, and we love to have them at birthday parties, graduation parties, and any gathering, really! I like to serve them alongside my Old Fashioned Cornbread Salad.
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Deli ham: I like the thinly sliced deli ham since it’s easier to “pile” it onto the buns, making little bundles.
- Smoked Gouda cheese: I prefer slices since they lay so nicely over the ham, but you can use shredded cheese, too. Either works great!
- Butter: I cook with unsalted butter so I can add as much or as little salt to taste.
- Spicy brown mustard: Use your favorite mustard in this recipe. A smoked mustard is also very delicious as part of the butter sauce.
How to make Kings Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9X13 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray; reserve.
Step 2: Open the rolls from their package, slide out the tray, and slice them in half, where you have all their tops in one “sheet”, and all their bottoms in one “sheet.”
Step 3: Place the bottoms in their sheet-like form in the prepared baking pan.
Step 4: Layer the ham on top of the rolls. Top the ham with the sliced or shredded cheese, whichever you are using.
Step 5: Top the cheese with the remaining half of the ham, then add the top sheet of the Hawaiian rolls.

Step 6: Meanwhile, melt the butter. Whisk in the Worcestershire Sauce, mustard, and brown sugar.
Step 7: Evenly pour the butter mixture over the tops of the rolls; use a pastry brush to evenly smooth the butter over each roll. Sprinkle with poppy seeds, as desired, if using.
Step 8: Cover the pan with foil. Bake the sliders, covered, for 20 minutes on the center oven rack.
Step 9: Remove the foil, and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Slice the sheet of sliders apart and serve at once.

My Recipe Tips
- Use a pizza cutter to cut the sliers apart – it makes cutting sliders so easy.
- Make these ahead of time and pop them in the oven at dinnertime or during the game. The house will smell amazing and you will look like a kitchen super star.
Kings Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders FAQs
You can make ham and cheese sliders ahead of time by following steps 1-7 in this post.
If you plan to pull them out of the refrigerator and quickly put them in the oven, add 5-10 minutes to the covered baking time.
If you can pull them out of the refrigerator, let them rest and warm to room temperature, then follow the original cooking directions.
A good way to keep sliders warm at a party is by placing them into a slow cooker set to the warm setting. Sliders can also be kept warm in the oven. Use the lowest temperature setting and keep the pan of sliders covered with foil to prevent them from drying out.
I like to figure 2 sliders per person if you are serving sliders at a party with other side dishes and appetizers.
Or, if you are serving sliders as a meal, its always a safe bet to figure 2 sliders per each male eating and 2 sliders per each female.
I love serving ham and cheese sliders with Crockpot Velveeta Mac and Cheese, Dill Pickle Pasta Salad, and Super Moist Caramel Apple Cake.
Bake your ham and cheese sliders for 20 minutes covered and 10 minutes uncovered. The last 10 minutes of baking time uncovered lets the top buns get crispy and extra golden brown.
Yes, do all the prep as the recipe directs, then wrap well in foil and freeze. To bake, thaw the sliders in the pan fully in the refrigerator, and bake as directed in the recipe card below or until hot throughout.
Which tools are helpful for this recipe?
9 x 13 Baking Pans – You can use a metal 9×13 baking pan for this sliders, but I really prefer glass 9×13 baking pans for sliders. I love the 9×13 glass baking pans that come with a nice silicone lid that’s raised a bit so the contents don’t get smashed down.
