Are you ready for a low-carb appetizer that will make you flip? These Air Fryer Dill Pickle Wings are the ticket for just that and we became instant fans after frying these up in our air fryer recently. Marinating them in the pickle/banana pepper brine makes them tender, juicy and super flavorful….we couldn’t get enough!
How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Wings
Chicken Wings. You’ll need the JUMBO package when you make these wings. In our neck of the woods, that’s a 2 – 2.5 lb. package from the fresh case. Or, if you want to substitute just chicken drummies instead of the whole wings, feel free – they work just great, too. We always buy the wings because they seem to be cheaper. I always go over my chicken wings really well, inspecting them for any stray feathers that need pulled off the tips and also to bend them in to the typical “triangular shape” that chicken wings should be.
Banana Peppers. These are found in the pickle aisle and they super mild in flavor, with just a bit of spicy-ness and what we prefer, but you can use ANY pepper packed in vinegar if you prefer something a little more spicy.
Dill Pickle Juice. This is what’s going to work (along with the banana peppers) to bring tons of flavor to your chicken wing meat. The dill pickle juice (vinegar) works as a brine for these chicken wings and makes them so delish!
Olive oil, granulated garlic, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Once you’ve marinated the chicken wings in the pickle juice/banana pepper juice, you’ve going to toss them in olive oil and season them with the granulated garlic and salt and pepper. Just another layer of flavor!
Mayo, Greek yogurt, dill pickle juice, chopped dill pickle, minced garlic, dried dill, kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. These are the ingredients that comprise your cool and creamy dipping sauce, the perfect accompaniment to crispy, air fryer wings. If you want to use all mayo instead of half mayo and half plain Greek yogurt, you certainly may, but I really like the tang that the Greek yogurt adds to the dipping sauce.
Easy Recipe Tips for Making Air Fryer Chicken Wings
- What if I don’t own an air fryer? Can I make these in the oven? Totally, and here’s how: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Follow the recipe as stated, except you’ll spread the brined/marinated/oiled/seasoned wings out over a greased rimmed baking sheet. Pop that into your preheated oven and cook the wings for 15 minutes. Turn the wings over, than bake an additional 10 minutes or so, or until the wings are 160-165 degrees F. internally, and crispy and browned on the outside.
- Why does the recipe call for plain Greek yogurt in the dipping sauce? One big reason: added tangy-ness! Well, and the yogurt also adds an extra creamy texture to the dipping sauce. If you don’t have plain Greek yogurt on hand, you can use all mayo, or half mayo and half sour cream.
- Can I make this recipe using sweet pickle juice and sweet pickles in the dipping sauce? Surely, but keep in mind that sweet pickles have SUGAR as an ingredient and that means the recipe is no longer considered low-carb. Still delicious, but not low-carb!
- Can I freeze these chicken wings? Great question, and yes you can. I freeze them right in the brine! It works perfectly and then you just thaw them in the brine in the fridge and proceed with air frying as usual.
- Do you recommend a particular air fryer? We own the Cuisinart TAO-60 Air Fryer/Toaster Oven and totally love it, which came as a total shocker. We use our air fryer ALL THE TIME and I especially love to make vegetables in mine – fresh broccoli, cauliflower and chick peas, green beans! Low-Carb Air Fryer Dill Pickle Wings
Low Carb Dill Pickle Wings
- 2 - 2.5 lbs chicken wings
- 1 cup dill pickle juice
- 12 oz. banana peppers, with juice
- 2 Tbs. olive oil
- 1 Tbs. granulated garlic
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Cool and Creamy Dipping Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayo
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2-3 Tbs. dill pickle juice
- 1-2 dill pickle spears, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp. dried dill
- kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
Place the chicken wings into a zip lock freezer bag; add the dill pickle juice and the banana peppers with juice, then seal the bag, massaging the wings around in the pickle juice a bit. Press out as much air as possible and seal the bag up tight; place the bag onto a rimmed cooking sheet or casserole dish, laying it out flat. Marinate at least 6-8 hours in refrigeration.
Meanwhile, prepare the dipping sauce by placing all the ingredients into a small bowl, whisking until smooth; adjust salt and pepper, to taste. Cover dipping sauce and refrigerate until ready to serve wings.
Drain and discard the pickle juice from the chicken wings; blot the wings dry using a few paper towels. Place wings into a large mixing bowl and drizzle with olive oil; toss to coat. Season with granulated garlic and black pepper, tossing again.
Arrange the wings in a single layer on the greased air fryer basket, leaving a bit of space between the wings; place the basket over the tray, then into the air fryer, setting it to 400 degrees on the air fry setting. Cook the wings for 10 minutes, then use tongs to turn the wings, cooking them another 10 minutes. Wings should be golden brown and crisped, 160-165 degrees F internally. Repeat with any remaining wings, working in batches. (If you over crowd the air fryer basket with wings, they won't get nice and crispy!)
Serve with the prepared dipping sauce.
